1982...the year of the Dog

Since Tyler's birthday was this week and he was born in 1982, we thought it would be fun to post some 1982 facts. In 1982:
  • The world's population was 4.610 billion
  • The median household income (in today's dollars) was $20,171
  • A gallon of gas cost an average of 91 cents - (For perspective, 91 cents in 1982 is equivalent to $1.95 in 2006)
  • The average cost of a new home was $82,200
  • A gallon of 2% milk cost $1.59
  • The Dow Jones Industrial average was in the mid 700s
  • San Francisco defeated Cincinnati 26-21 in the Super Bowl
  • Martina Navratilova won the women's Wimbledon and Jimmy Connors won the men's (This is for all my in laws out there)
  • North Carolina, led by James Worthy defeated the Patrick Ewing-led Georgetown in the NCAA championship 63-62 thanks in large part to freshman Michael Jordan's game winning shot with 17 seconds to play.
  • The LA Lakers defeated the Philadelphia 76ers 4-2 to win the NBA Finals
  • Italy (che bello!) defeated West Germany 3-1 to win the World Cup
  • Michael Jackson releases Thriller which went on to become the best-selling album of all time at more than 25 million copies.
  • "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor and popularized by Rocky III was the #2 song of 1982, "Hard to Say I'm Sorry" by Chicago was #3, and "Abracadabra" by the Steve Miller Band was #5
  • CBS swept the top 4 most popular TV shows with (in order): 60 Minutes, Dallas, MASH, and Magnum PI

  • Motor Trend's "Car of the Year" was the Chevrolet Camaro Z28
  • Gandhi won Best Picture for 1982.
  • ET was the most popular movie of 1982 earning $310 million at the box office
  • A VCR cost a whopping $650.90 (that's almost $1400 in today's dollars)
  • Jeffery R. Holland was President of BYU
  • There were 20 LDS temples in 1982 - the most recent being the Jordan River Utah temple
  • There were 1,392 stakes, 180 missions, 26,300 missionaries, and 5,165,000 members in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
  • The most popular baby names were Michael and Jennifer. Tyler came in at #66 - thanks Mom and Dad

  • 22 million Trivial Pursuit games were sold in 1982
  • Diet Coke debuted
